Building the Future of America’s Maritime Workforce
The United States Navy is entering a historic period of fleet expansion and modernization. New naval construction initiatives, combined with an already strained shipbuilding industrial base, have exposed a critical national challenge: the severe shortage of skilled shipbuilding labor.
Despite record investments and growing demand across the maritime and defense industries, U.S. shipyards continue to face significant workforce shortages that threaten construction timelines, operational readiness, and long-term industrial capacity. This challenge is not temporary — it is structural. Existing workforce pipelines alone cannot produce skilled tradespeople at the scale or speed required to meet America’s growing maritime needs.
In response to this challenge, Planting Healing is developing the United States Shipbuilding Academy (USSA) — an innovative workforce development initiative designed to help strengthen America’s maritime workforce pipeline while creating life-changing career opportunities throughout underserved communities.
Currently under development along the Gulf Coast — home to one of the nation’s most important shipbuilding and defense regions — the Academy is envisioned as a scalable, industry-connected training model focused on preparing the next generation of skilled maritime and industrial workers.
The United States Shipbuilding Academy is being designed to provide hands-on workforce training opportunities in shipbuilding, welding, fabrication, maritime trades, manufacturing, and other skilled industries critical to America’s industrial future. The initiative aims to serve youth, adults, veterans, and individuals seeking a second chance by connecting them to meaningful careers, certifications, mentorship, apprenticeships, and workforce readiness support.
Through partnerships with shipyards, employers, workforce agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations, the Academy seeks to create direct pathways into high-demand industries while helping employers address long-term labor shortages.
More than a workforce training initiative, the United States Shipbuilding Academy represents a broader mission of restoration, economic empowerment, and community transformation. By investing in people, expanding access to opportunity, and rebuilding confidence through meaningful careers, the Academy aims to strengthen families, communities, and the future of America’s maritime workforce.
Together, we are working to build futures — one skill, one opportunity, and one life at a time.
